Wesnoth 1.9 Brings Awesome New Features

Friday, September 17th, 2010
There is no question Battle for Wesnoth is the most played turn-based strategy game on the Linux platform, being probably the most polished, full-featured and addictive game in its category. In this article I will talk about development release 1.9, plans for the upcoming 2.0 release and the brand new features offered at the time of writing. For users who will want to try this game for the first time, keep in mind that the version reviewed here is a development version, that means it will be buggy and incomplete, with a lot of features stripped down or not working. Try the stable, 1.8.4 version instead.

The Future Of Basilisk Games And Eschalon Updates !

Friday, September 17th, 2010

A lot is going on with Basilisk Games, the bringers of the Eschalon Books cRPG series.

Basilisk games support their games well and didn’t forget about Book 1; recently they released 1.06 version which is compiled using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 libraries and should work better with newer distributions.
All you have to do to get the latest version is to email Basilisk Games with your purchase information (order number works best!) and they will activate a new download link for you.
But if you have no problems with your current version of Book 1, you don’t need the update as it offers no additional content.

Neotron Games: Treasure Trove of 2D Games

Neotron Games

These guys have compiled quite a selection of quality, complete games. Actually, to such an extent, one could say that they are one of the most prolific open source game devs out there, even if not all of their works are completely “open”.

Most of their games are compatible with the GPX-Wiz, and hopefully the Pandora once Bennu, the language they use for developing their games, gets an official port.

HoN Trial Is Now Open For Everyone !

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I was hoping it would take longer so my last “contest”/giveaway will make sense – but now everyone can register a trial account and play 10 matches.
All you have to do is registered at this page : http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/fbtrial.php .

You will off course be able to play only no stats matches, then if you like you can buy a full account for $30.
It might look like a lot, but believe me if you like the game it’s worth it and will supply you with endless hours of fun.

First-Person Shooter Game for Linux: Warsow Review

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

It’s been a while since I last reviewed a shooter game for Linux, and one of them was World of Padman (reviewed here), which was a cartoon-like, funny first-person shooter. Well, the same goes for Warsow, the game I’m going to talk about in this article. Every graphical aspect of Warsow indicates we’re dealing with a cartoon-like universe, from the character models to weapons and maps.

PlayOnLinux 3.8.1 has been released

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Hi everybody!

PlayOnLinux 3.8.1 was released this morning.

What has changed in the new release?

Bugs #30 and #31 were fixed.
Function introduced with PoL 3.7.7, for auto_shortcut was buggy in last release, now fixed.
Full rewrite of an internal function that installs a plugin shipped with PoL automatically on startup.
Plugin Capture was updated with the last version (2.1.1).
Translation was updated with the last available on Launchpad (synced the 2010-09-02).
And finally new tools appeared, playonlinux-cmd.

About translation

Many thanks for all translators, I don’t know how to export the nicknames of people that made translations on Launchpad. With your help PlayOnLinux is now translated in a least 3 new languages such as Korean, Czech, Turkish…
You can continue to help by translating, the next release will be synced with the latest translations.

What is playonlinux-cmd?

This is a new tool to manage PlayOnLinux in scripts, this was requested on the bug tracker as a feature… and this tool is not yet fully finished.
Currently you can ask for an update of the script database, run already installed software and start the installation of an application.
There are some known bugs that I discovered just after releasing PoL 3.8.1. Currently you can’t use this software if you have never run PlayOnLinux before (will be fixed in next release).
To force an update:

playonlinux-cmd --update

To start an installation:

playonlinux-cmd --start-install 'Sofware'

To run already installed sofware:

playonlinux-cmd --run 'Software'

Please note that –start-install doesn’t install silently but just directly opens the graphical GUI for the software that you request, so you always need to answer prompts.

We advise you update your PlayOnLinux version.

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Danger from the deep is nice open source submarine sumilator game. According to their website “Danger from the Deep (known as dangerdeep or DftD) is a free (as in free speech), Open Source World War II german submarine simulator. The program and source code is available under the GPL license and most of the artwork/data is released under a Creative Commons license (Attribution/NonCommercial/Non-Derivative works).

DftD is currently being developed on Linux (i386 and AMD64) and Windows. There are binarys available for Linux (i386 and amd64), Windows (32bit) and there are some old packages for MacOSX. Danger from the Deep makes use of SDL/OpenGL and thus should be portable to other operating systems or platforms.’”

Windows build | Mac build | source tarball

2010-09-12: Version 2.3.5_RC4

General

  • Fix: Possible crash when designing units (r11630, #2150)

Multiplayer

  • Change: Display no-tank, no-cyborg or no-VTOL icons if the relevant factories are disabled via limits (r11633)
  • Fix: Make sure new players are shown immediately (r11650, #2136)
  • Fix: Lobby tooltip display (r11647, #2157)
  • Update Rebalance 0.8.3: (r11635)
    * Weaken Flak Cannon and Sunburst a lot more. I’m pretty sure this change makes them too weak, but when introducing new weapons it’s better to make them too weak than too strong.
    * Increase HP of a bunch of VTOL weapons
    * Remove VTOL Flak Cannon
    * Slightly buff Hurricane/Whirlwind
