EDuke32- A first person shooter game for Linux

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Eduke32 is awesome first person shooter game and a cross-platform Duke3D (Duke Nukem 3D) port which provides many new features for mod authors, including an enhanced scripting system and OpenGL renderer. It offers countless platforms on which to build and improve on and with no shortage of Duke Nukem enthusiasts it can only get better, Thanx to Eduke32′s creators we are able to match memory and relive our gaming youth with much greater graphics.

As a first-person shooter, the gameplay of Duke Nukem 3D involves moving through levels presented from the protagonist’s point of view, shooting enemies on the way.
The environment of Duke Nukem 3D is highly destructible; most props can be destroyed by the player.

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Wesnoth 1.8.5 has been released. This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.8 branch. This release does mainly consist of smaller fixes and changes. Current plans are that this is the last 1.8.x release. For information about further changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread.
We offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment the Windows, the MacOSX and the OpenPandora packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. If you find a bug, please report it.

S2 Games Calls Their HoN Linux Port A Big Success

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

During the summer we were giving away free beta keys for Heroes of Newerth, a game developed by S2 Games that had a native Linux client. During that time we gave away more than 1,000 keys, but since then the retail version of the game was launched to much excitement for both Linux and Windows
gamers. This week we learned from S2 Games about how they view their Linux port.

Energy Tycoon

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Rejoice! Now you can become the CEO of a multinational evil energy empire on your home PC. Build as many nuclear power plants as you always wished, destroy the world’s climate with coal electrification and make a big advertisement campaign to greenwash your evil plans with some wind-mills ;)

Energy Tycoon

You can download this great looking game called Energy Tycoon, for Windows and Linux, and the source-code is available under a MIT/BSD like license. It includes some non-free parts however (e.g. irrklang AFAIK) and the media license is unclear, but it’s rare that such a polished game shows up as open-source more or less out of nowhere.

BOH update13 released

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

For both those who are having a great gaming time now and those who will be back at their computers after the summer, here is one more massive update that takes BOH to yet another level.

More specifically, this update:

  • adds world standings: the game can send automatically the local records to a global server that keeps the real-time standings of all the players in the world who make use of this new feature;
  • adds a new tile kind: the message point, i.e. a location that reveals a message (a hint, a riddle, a part of story, etc.);
  • uses the messages points to make many missions more intriguing and to improve the tutorial missions (which have also been slightly modified for greater effectiveness);
  • adds the theme “pyramid”;
  • adds 5 new missions;
  • adds the possibility of specifying a success epilogue and a failure epilogue for each phase;
  • reworks automappers: the more powerful one now covers the same area of the other one, but provides also an alternative rendering mode whereby the map reflects faithfully the actual colors of the tiles;
  • makes movements of enemies clearer;
  • allows the RM to open locked passages and exits only when facing them;
  • removes sidestepping;
  • makes [SPACE] the default automapper key;
  • makes the alignment of menu texts definable by the theme designer;
  • improves a few strings in some translations;
  • improves and updates the manuals;
  • applies various other changes.

The update can be downloaded for free from the DOWNLOADS page.
The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

Two Free Linux Civilization-Like Games: Freeciv and FreeCol

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

While most of the proprietary games get all the attention on Windows, on Linux it’s the other way around. Of course, this is because we’re stuck with only few choices for mainly any type of game, from arcade to shooters or strategies. But there are good, if not great, alternatives in Linux.

Today I will overview two Linux games which are a very good alternative to the famous Civilization series from Windows, Freeciv and FreeCol. They are both open-source, free, and usually come included with every distribution.
