Wesnoth 1.7.7: Development Release

Monday, October 26th, 2009

A new Development release is ready. This is the eighth release in the 1.7.x tree. This release includes bugfixes as well as graphics and translations updates. Have a look at this forum thread for some additional information about this release.
As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment the Windows package and the MacOSX packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite many bugs. If you find one, report it.

In development since 2002, the game creation tool Game Editor finally becomes Open Source. By using a dual license system, the Game Editor developer wants to create a self suported open source model, by selling a license to users that’s won’t to create open source games, sharing the reveneus with the developers thats have contributed to the code. Warzone 2100 2.2.4.

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

The developer staff brings you the release of Warzone 2100 2.2.4.

This release is network incompatible with previous versions. (You cannot play multiplayer games with previous versions of Warzone.)

We squashed some more bugs, some balance changes, and other numerous things.

For a complete list see the Changelog.

As always: Please report all bugs, without them, we can’t fix them!
Since there is some confusion on how to handle bug reports, I have decided to post the bug reporting guidelines here:

Bug Reporting
Bugs are different kinds of errors and glitches that sometimes can even lead to crashes. Due to the limited resources of the Warzone 2100 Project not everything can be tested prior to release. In order to be able to fix those bugs we need you to report those bugs. For the bug reports to be the most helpful we put up this page as a guide to writing good bug reports.

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Vega Strike is an free and Open Source 3D Action-Space-Sim (works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX) that lets you trade, fight, and explore in a vast universe .

Vega Strike aims to insert players into a large, dynamic universe with diverse factions of varying disposition to the player and to each other, and an economy model where trade, combat and exploration are all profitable. Financial gains allow the player to buy upgrades and/or better vehicles, thus enabling him/her to advance into more dangerous and profitable missions. The player can have varying levels of relations with factions. Negative relations can form if the player kills some of a given faction’s ships. Positive relations can be formed if the player destroys ships that are part of an enemy to a given faction. Players can either buy and sell cargo, or accept missions from the Mission Computer, as well as talking to people in the local bar at the space station/planet. In the tradition of some precursor games, individuals of significant plot importance are often found in bars.

0 A.D. Promises Real Gaming for Ubuntu

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

And now a brief break from business-oriented coverage on WorksWithU. As a history Ph.D. student by day and free-software geek by night, I find that my poles of interest rarely converge. That’s why I was so excited when the real-time historical strategy game 0 A.D. was switched to an open-source license in July. I’ve been meaning since then to give it a try, and finally found the time and hardware necessary to do that. Here are the results.

Set in antiquity and designed with historical accuracy as a priority, 0 A.D. is a real-time strategy game that supports Linux, Windows and OS X. The developers, Wildfire Games, originally intended to distribute it as freeware, but decided to open-source the code last summer in hopes that it would speed the development process.

The game is not yet really playable, but it runs.
