id Software will no longer support linux

Friday, July 24th, 2009

As the german news site golem.de writes id Software plans not to support linux in the future with the “Tech 5 Engine”.

Because of the costs tt is very unlikely that the next wolfenstein title will be published for linux means John Carmack because it’s in development at Rage and published by ActiVision.
Further he said that he see performance issues with the tech 5 engine in the linux implementations of OpenGL and it would probably just run fine on nvidias propertary drivers for linux.

Okay, Linux Gamers Are REALLY Excited!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

It seems as if Linux gamers are indeed really excited for having new games on Linux, well, “really excited” may still be an understatement. About 24 hours ago we talked about Heroes of Newerth, a game being developed by S2 Games, was coming to Linux and we were able to hand out beta invitations to begin playing the game immediately as part of their closed testing process. Beyond that though, S2 Games has asked that the media refrain from sharing many details about this online role playing game that is derived from DoTA, but with much fancier graphics. In the past day we have already given out far more than 450 beta invitations to Linux users and there is no sign yet that the requests are letting up.

Linux Gamers Are Excited For New Games

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

A few hours ago we invited everyone to come play this new Linux-native game with us, which happened to be Heroes of Newerth by S2 Games. This game is still under development and details surrounding this title are very scarce as the media (including Phoronix), is not yet allowed to post any media or really talk about the game that much…

Comparing the transport simulation games | OpenTTD vs Simutrans

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Transport Simulations are a genre that has not translated to the high gloss, high production 3d game market now seen on PC and console games. However, they retain a huge following and command a niche.

As it stands, since most game publishers have lost interest in making this sort of game, what remains is almost a two horse race with a few outliers. Interestingly, both are now Open Source, so they run on Linux, Windows and Mac. This also means they are being actively developed and have huge relatively loyal communities around them.

The two main Transport Simulation games still keeping up to date are OpenTTD and Simutrans. There are others which will be briefly mentioned below. read on to see a comparison of the two, along with screenshots ,vids a few strategy tips as well as details on their community and how to get them and play them.

Wesnoth 1.7.2: Development Release

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

A new Development release is ready. This is the third release in the 1.7.x tree. This release shows the first results of our Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship. For some more information about this release have a look at the forum thread.
As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment the Windows package and the MacOSX packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite many bugs. If you find one, report it.

Linux Games: Eschalon Book I

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

In this entry to the Linux Games department I am going to introduce you to a very fine RPG entry created by Basilisk Games called Eschalon Book I. This game is one of the few full-blown RPG games available for Linux, Windows, and OS X. Eschalon Book I won the 2007 Indie game of the year and with good reason. It’s well done.

Now this game isn’t your standard, free, GPL fare. This game allows you to download a demo but to get the full blown fun you need to purchase the full version. The good news is that the full version will only set you back $19.95 for the download version. You can also purchase the CD version for $39.95. Believe me, this game is worth the price of the download version. Let’s take a look and see why.
