Top 5 Linux Games for 2009

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

As we go about “realizing” our New Year’s resolutions were maybe just a bit too stringent, I’m going review the top five games in Linux. Once the great downfall of the platform, gaming can now only be considered a strength, in the hopes you take up this guilty pleasure and wait for 2010 before you give up on gaming. May I present the premier Linux gaming software with the best from each genre.

Tremulous (Shooter)
This FPS (first-person shooter) game is portable on all main operating systems (Linux, Windows, Mac) and is built using the Quake engine.
Players choose between two races: aliens and humans.

21 More of the Best Free Linux Games

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Over the past 4 months we have continued to receive a steady stream of emails from individuals recommending games that were not included in our previous free game articles.

After much testing, we have whittled down these users’ recommendations to a list of 21 highly addictive Linux games, covering as many different types of game genre as possible. Hopefully, there should be something of interest here for all types of gamers! All of these games are great fun to play.

To be eligible for inclusion in the list below, games again needed to satisfy the following requirements:

Free to play (no download charge, no monthly charge)

Does not require Wine to run. Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows software.

Not in the early stages of development

Simulate This - City Building + Tycoon Game Reviews

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Welcome to a Free Gamer special! People often accuse the Free software and open source game sphere of lacking depth, that there are few good games. In 2009 Free Gamer is dedicated to dispelling this myth. As part of a series of articles on specific genres, highlighting the games that people develop for the love of development in order for us to play, I humbly present a set of reviews of open source city building and tycoon games. I try to be fair and critical, and I note that these games are all enjoyable in their own way. They are all certainly worth a look.

Warzone 2100 Resurrection

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Back in the slower, happier year of 1999 there were a number of contenders for victory in the first round of “proper-3D” real time strategies. The finest of these was known as Warzone 2100, and its base-building prowess was practically unparalleled. The game has been freeware for some time, but is now supported by the Warzone 2100 Resurrection project, which is doing its best to provide for, and improve on, the original game. I’ve been playing Warzone again in 2009, and I’ve posted some thoughts and impressions after the jump.

Wesnoth 1.5.9 aka 1.6-beta1: Development Release

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Finally we made it, the first beta for the upcoming stable 1.6 series is ready. Feel free to celebrate the new release with us in this forum thread.
As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment the Windows and the MacOSX packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. If you find a bug, please report it.

TA3D 0.5.2

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

A new bug fix release is out !

TA3D 0.5.2 mainly fix 24/32bits GAF bugs, and radar/sight/sonar/*distance bugs. Also it includes several fixes for the resource installer which should not freeze any more and should be able to detect CDs on any Linux system (unless you changed your CD mount point to something non standard).

So nothing new, it’s still the 0.5 branch.

As usual, Linux packages can be found in our repositories, and win32 installer in the download page. But since the source code is available from SVN (and it takes time to build and upload a source package), I won’t upload any source package for 0.5.2, if you want the source: svn co http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/TA3D/tags/ta3d_0_5_2 :P

Blood Frontier: The Latest Open-Source FPS

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Cube was early on one of the first open-source first-person shooter games designed around its own engine. The 3D graphics for Cube were not the best, but development of this game had been going on since 2001. Based upon the Cube engine was then the Sauerbraten game that was also referred to as “Cube 2″ with its engine being redesigned. Now though another game is emerging and its engine is derived from Sauerbraten. This game is called Blood Frontier and in this article we have a few screenshots of this game, which is working its way towards a stable release for the open-source community.
