OpenArena 0.7.7 patch released!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I love the 0.7.x generation.
Anyway, this is mainly a bugfix release. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you upgrade from 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 (or rather, from 0.7.1 to 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 for half of you)

- Fixed “Getting stuck bug”
- Fixed logging bug
- Fixed UI crash
- Fixed overflow in Multiplayer list + Some of beast’s changes to server list (longer names)
- Instantgib and All rockets disabled during single player startup
- Clears nextmap after single player
- Windows only: new SDL.dll allows Caps Lock and Num Lock to be used as keys.
- Using protocol number 69, this should only now show servers running 0.7.7 (In other words, no more lotsofservers with ‘invalid game folder’ error)

For those who don’t read the front page, then get your rear there!

Nexuiz shoots to the top of gaming list

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

After I reviewed Alien Arena last year, some readers criticized my choice of that first-person shooter (FPS) as the best free software game I had played. Several suggested Nexuiz would have been a better choice. At the time, I had not played it. Now that I have tried Nexuiz 2.4, it has become my favorite free software FPS.

Nexuiz runs on an improved Quake engine called DarkPlaces. The engine has been undergoing on-and-off development by Lord Havoc, the game’s creator, for several years. On icculus.org, Lord Havoc says he developed a custom OpenGL-only engine for DarkPlaces, and other modifications that “support Windows WGL and Linux GLX and have greatly improved graphics and image quality.”

Wesnoth 1.4.2: Maintenance Release

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.4.2 has been released. This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.4.x branch. In this release just some smaller bugs were fixed and many translations were updated. To celebrate the release and comment on it, post in this forum thread. As with the last development series, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment only the Gentoo and Debian binaries are ready. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.

Linux Game Publishing is still in the middle of porting X3: Reunion and Bandits: Phoenix Rising to Linux, but they soon will be starting work on another title. This game coming to Linux, however, still isn’t known. At the LGP website they will be showing one pixel of an image every second until the entire image has loaded. Once all pixels (or most of them) have been loaded, the forthcoming title will be know.
