Wesnoth 1.3.18 aka 1.4-rc1: Development Release

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.3.18 is out. This is the first release candidate for 1.4. To learn about the changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread. As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache. Keep in mind to read the sections about 1.3.18 and 1.3.17 since there was no 1.3.17 officially available and all changes of it are included in 1.3.18.
All the major binaries are ready. You can find them at the download page. This release candidate for 1.4 should not include many bugs, but if you find one, please report it.

Warzone 2100 2.1 Beta 1 released

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Hello everyone!

Finally, after many, many months, we have started a new release cycle. Namely the 2.1 series, which kicks off today with a first beta; Warzone 2100 version 2.1-beta1.

This version introduces a multitude of new features, of which these are the most prominent ones:

  • Internationalisation/Translation support by means of gettext
  • Multi-turret support for droids (i.e. tanks and cyborgs) and structures
  • Video options menu; allows selecting of (among others) the screen resolution and windowed/fullscreen mode
  • A new mini-map mode: the heightmap (use CTRL+TAB to cycle through mini-map modes)
  • Stock AI greatly improved
  • Additional AI provided: Aivolution
  • 64-bit compatibility! Warzone now runs on systems with 64 bit processors, kernels and libraries as well!

Now I probably forgot about 60% of all newly introduced features, so for more details see the change log. Please note though that we’ve been working for over a year on what now has become 2.1-beta1. So even the change log shows only a relatively small portion of all changes. The best way to truely discover all changes is by playing the game!

Additionally there are many parts of the game that have been completely or partially rewritten. So old bugs may have been made completely irrelevant and new ones most certainly have been introduced. So new bug reports are most certainly very welcome, even if it are bugs that where present in 2.0.x already. Any suggestions are welcome as well of course.

Known issues
These are some generally known issues. This list will be expanded once we think of more.

  • The multiplayer code has become a _lot_ more stable than it was, but running out of sync still happens. Though it now happens less often and the sync differences are smaller.
  • The game in general still crashes a lot in debug builds (due to failed assertions).
  • Text is not always drawn correctly on Mac OSX systems.

Download
Please note that currently there is only a Windows executables available yet. The rest will be provided ASAP.

The source code and all available binaries can be found at the download page.

ZDoom 2.2.0

Friday, February 15th, 2008

After far too long, ZDoom 2.2.0 has finally been released. There have been a lot of changes—too many for me to list here—that can be found in the changelog. This release is also accompanied by a new version of ACC, which I quietly uploaded last night. Both are available from the standard place on the downloads page.

Wesnoth 1.3.16 aka 1.4-beta3: Development Release

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.3.16 is out. This is hopefully the last beta release before we start to get out release candidates. It includes some balancing changes and many bug fixes. To learn about the changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread. As with the last development releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment none of the major binaries are ready. Once they are done you can find them at the download page. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite a few bugs. If you find one, please report it.
Update: The Windows and OpenSolaris binaries are now available at the download page.

Linux Got Game: Alien Arena 2007 Review

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Alien Arena 2007 is a free/open-source first-person shooter game based on source code released by id Software. Started by COR Entertainment in 2004, the game combines a 1950s-era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. Alien Arena is primarily an online multiplayer action game, although single player campaigns are also available against bots.

Alien Arena is multi-platform and playable on Microsoft Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. Ubuntu users can simply download and install the game using Synaptic Package Manager. I finally had the chance to set-up and play Alien Arena last weekend. Thanks to SlippJigg for encouraging me to try it. I got the latest version of Alien Arena 2007 which is 6.10, and played it for 3 hours straight. Here’s is my quick view of the game:

A new free online video show dedicated to showcasing Open Source video games. Every episode will give you a look at a new Open Source video game. What does Open Source stand for? In a nut shell it means free software. So it is free for anybody to download and use. The actual source code is available for other users to modify themselves.

Open Source will in my eyes be the future of computing.

Please Note: That the visual footage of the game and sound effects are the property of their respective owners.

Games, Games, and Free Software

Monday, February 11th, 2008

A good open source platform game that never gets a mention is The Goonies: 20th Anniversary Edition. This game is a remake of the classic NES / Master System version by Konami. The same team is also responsible two rather fun arcade top-down racing games, F1 Spirit and Road Fighter, which are also remakes. I’m not sure what the source license is for these (ack, there goes my Free Software credibility) but you can get the source and the games compile / run on the 3 major platforms (y’know, Lin/Win/Mac).

Warsow 0.41 released

Monday, February 11th, 2008

3 weeks after the release of 0.4, the Warsow team brings you 0.41; as usual, a build which mostly aims to solve some bugs, with some minor improvements and additions. The most notable changes are: the missing texture bug on wca1, the rocket projectile speed (weak and strong are both 1000up/s like they were supposed to be), some fixes in the movement area (cg_oldmovement 1 should really feel like old movement now), and some additional maps (the two ctf maps which got playtested in the Warsow pickup channel for a while), and adding some missing settings in graphics and options menus.

Also the mac release has been greatly improved, and includes all needed frameworks and gamedata! For support and troubleshooting, head to this thread.

The release comes in both an installer for windows, as update packages for windows and linux. To install, extract the package over your old Warsow 0.4 folder, keeping intact the folder structure.
