Warsow 0.42 released!

Friday, February 29th, 2008

After 4 weeks of hard work, it’s time to release Warsow 0.42. This latest release contains various bug fixes, changes and new features. The list includes fixes for the challenge queue and some performance improvements for WarsowTV. New features include the ability for WarsowTV to playback demos. The release is focused on code improvements so there is no new media for 0.42, but be sure to check the blog and idle #warsow on Quakenet to be able to participate in public beta tests.

The release comes in the form of a complete installer (for Windows and Mac) and a full or update package (for Windows and Linux). If you previously used the installer for 0.4 or 0.41, the 0.42 version will automatically recognise your configuration and take care of the update. If you are using the update package, please ensure that you have 0.41 installed first. To install the update, just extract the package over your Warsow 0.41 installation.

Wesnoth 1.3.19 aka 1.4-rc2: Development Release

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.3.19 is out. This is the second release candidate for 1.4. It looks like we are already very close to a final 1.4 release. To learn about the most important changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread. As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, but there aren’t this many this time…
All the major binaries are ready. You can find them at the download page. This release candidate for 1.4 should not include many bugs, but if you find one, please report it.

Frozen-Bubble - A Ridiculously Addictive Puzzle Game

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Frozen-Bubble has blissfully stolen hours and hours of my life with its addictive gameplay and flippin’ awesome soundtrack. It’s an easy game with a simple premise: shoot colors bubbles onto the game board in an attempt to match up three or more similarly colored bubbles. Doing so will cause them to fall from the board, taking connected bubbles with them. If you clear all of the bubbles, you move on to the next level. If the bubbles pile up and cover the entire screen, you lose the game and restart the entire level.

Games for Linux: comparison of free software shooters

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

About a week ago, Joe Barr posted a feature on Linux.com titled “New Alien Arena 6.10 blows away its FPS competition” yet gave no real comparisons with other similar games, regretable since his conclusion was that it “blows away its competition”.

This was done in the same style as Barr’s previous feature, “Tremulous: The best free software game ever?” which described Tremulous but also lacked comparisons and relations to other games. This feature hopes to be a thorough comparison of the major free software shooters.

FIFE is starting to come of age. Although their tech-demo collaboration ended after a dispute between the two parties, Zero Project have continued their efforts and have settled on FIFE for their game project which has so far been two years in the making. To celebrate their second birthday they’ve put up an array of WIP screenshots. FIFE got a nice new layout for it’s wiki too.
