Savage 2 finally released

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

This early morning Savage 2 got finally released to the public. Today you can buy the game online and start playing right away. You can also make a demo account, where you can play the game for 5 hours, then you have to activate the account. Later today S2Games will upload the 1.0.0 patch, taking the final step releasing the game.

S2Jesse also made a new ingame video that you can view on their splash site. We think it is annoying because you have to watch it every time you visit their site. But after watching the video we now know that Savage 2 has definately no monthly fee and that it is a “reasonably” priced game.

We hope to see you all ingame.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars v1.4

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Splash Damage and id Software have released the version 1.4 update (changelog) for their sci-fi multiplayer first-person shooter, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. I don’t have a Linux-specific changelog just yet (but when there is, it’ll be up at the ET:QW GNU/Linux FAQ), but here’s a rundown on the many UI and gameplay changes this patch brings.

Wesnoth 1.3.14 aka 1.4-beta1: Development Release

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.3.14 is out. This release marks the start of the feature and string freeze. To learn about the changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread. As with the last development releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment only the Windows binary is ready. You can find it at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite a few bugs. If you find one, please report it.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a hard-core, multiplayer, first-person shooter that will run natively on the Linux operating system. Built off a modified Doom III Engine, Quake Wars was released late 2007, and it is the favorite game of the LinuxHow2 crowd. In the following review, we will show some screenshots, share our thoughts, and give you a few tips on installing this game on your favorite Linux distro.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a first-person shooter, class-based game that’s a sequel to the runaway hit Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Set in the same science fiction universe as the Quake II and Quake 4 games but with gameplay resembling the original Enemy Territory, Quake Wars is a huge, action-based experience.

Sim City, Micropolis, Lincity, Lincity-NG

Hm, time for some nostalgia. The original Sim City game is now GPL’d under the new name Micropolis, and currently being packaged for Debian. There goes my 3.7 minutes of spare time per day…

MIB Live Games

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

MIB Live Games is a treasure trove for Linux gamers; at last count over 100 games, 48 in arcade alone. As it is based on Mandriva 2008, the setup (and possible installation) are a breeze; to say that everything is included out of the box on this remaster of Mandriva 2008 ‘One’ would be an understatement indeed. It can be installed or used as a liveDVD (3.4GB); as there was already a Mandriva on my test box I just ran it in liveDVD mode, and even using an underpowered Intel video card all the 3D compiz-fusion eye candy and games worked flawlessly. Not that I tried every one of the games. Heh.

SimCity Source Code Released

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

The source code for the original SimCity has been released under the GPL, under its original working title of Micropolis.

Changes to the code have been made by Don Hopkins, who had worked on ports of the project when it was originally released and also adapted the game to the One Laptop Per Child project. The name change and the removal of all references to SimCity in the source were made in order to protect Electronic Arts’ Sim franchise trademark. Other modifications include a new splash screen, changes to the user interface and the removal of the plane crash disaster as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

WoP Patch re-release for Mac systems

Friday, January 11th, 2008

After the release of the WoP Patch 1.2 for Mac some users reported issues with the universal binary. Especially on older PowerPCs and MacOS 10.4 and downwards WoP crashed without any error message. We are sorry for this but now we are able to provide a solution to fix the problem. We made a new universal binary supporting Intels and PowerPCs as well from MacOS 10.3 on. (Sorry, but MacOS 10.2 won’t be supported anymore!) Many thanks to the Mac users of our community out there for reporting and testing.
