Free/Open-source First-person Shooter Games

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

A first-person shooter (Commonly called FPS) is an action video game that involves “an avatar, one or more ranged weapons, and a varying number of enemies”. FPSs render the game world from the visual perspective of the player character. FPS was one of the first genres to use key technologies such as 3D graphics, online play, and modding. Enhanced realism combined with graphic violence has also made FPS a common topic in ongoing controversies over video games.

I have collected some quality free/open-source first-person shooter games. From this list, I have only tried ActionCube, which I really had fun playing with. Hence, I would love to try all of these games someday. Just a little warning to parents though; most of these games are indeed violent. You better let your little kids sleep first before splurging with these games. So without any more delay, here’s the list already:

Wesnoth 1.3.15 aka 1.4-beta2: Development Release

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Wesnoth 1.3.15 is out. It consists of lots of bugfixes and translation updates. To learn about the changes in this release, have a look at this forum thread. As with the last development releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache…
At the moment none of the major binaries are ready. Once they are done you can find them at the download page. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite a few bugs. If you find one, please report it.

moddb.com awards

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Tremulous has placed 5th in the annual moddb.com competition, despite no new version being released since we won the same competition last year. Speaking of which, work continues on Tremulous, slowly but steadily. Most of the non-player visible system level features have now been completed, so things should get more interesting otherwise. The Mercenaries Guild guys have been hugely helpful by working on experimental balance changes under the direction of Norfenstein. You can help out here by playing on their server, thus creating more balance data with which to further refine the game.

20 MOST Popular Linux Games

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I spent some time compiling this list and seeing how many nice games are available for Linux I couldnt help but wonder: why are we still using Vista? There are so many Windows advocates who bring as anti Linux argument an “absence” of games for Linux. Well, they are wrong! There are enough games from Linux and the great news is that they are free and fun!
In comparison, almost everything that comes on Windows, with a few exceptions (solitaire and the like) comes with a price.
The Linux games are open source. Than means that they are: free, with no string attached, created by people who love Linux and are painless to install. Besides, they are Windows compatible. So you can enjoy Linux fun on a Windows platform at any time!

The Art of Wesnoth

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

No, I’m not going to break out my Sun Tzu quotes (although that would be a cool idea for a next post ;) )

What this is about is me finally finishing the uploading of all the core images in the current Wesnoth build and just now finishing with the tagging of it. As I was categorizing everything with tags like Lich or their respective faction, I noticed that the level of artwork has significantly increased in the last years since I’ve last played Wesnoth (and it just keeps getting better by the day). In fact it’s so good that I couldn’t help but want to show it off to the rest of the world.
